The Guide to Wedding Entertainment
Band or DJ?
I want to start by saying I have no recommendation for a DJ vs a band. They both play the music you request and have mics for when speeches and entrances happen. At the end of the day it's which you would prefer more. I do however have to say, the addition of a horns section with the band is always fun, but that's just me.
Why Entertainment is Important
Anyways, music! It’s something everyone listens to, and if it sounds bad people will notice, and they will tell you. If we’re talking in terms of sheer time, your reception, and the dancing during it, is where most of your wedding day is spent. Playing the music you want to hear at the right times is what it’s all about. That's why I recommend, just like your photographer, that you get on the phone with anyone you're considering hiring as your DJ (or band). Who they are, and their vibe is almost like the photo style of a photographer. And what a lot of people don't realize is their vibe controls if and when people get on the dance floor. Half of what being a DJ is is being a good MC. Being able to talk to a crowd and get them excited and engaged is something people don't realize is important until everyone is sitting in their seats while Gasolina is playing in the background.
What Package Should You Get?
Just like everything else, I'm not going to tell you to pick every single add-on they have, from the dancing on the clouds to 4 TVs and lasers, but I will recommend adding in up-lighting. Some venues have it, so check with them first, but if the venue doesn't have it, I recommend adding it on with your DJ (or band). In simplest terms, up-lighting is the lights going around the perimeter of the reception space, adding color to the walls. Some of them are connected to the music as well to add a fun atmosphere during dance sets, but even as just a solid color they add a little something extra to the space. Instead of your photos and videos having a dark background behind everyone, there's a pop of color adding dimension and depth that makes the photos stand out. In terms of cost, it’s relatively low (obviously, it ranges depending on the company), but for someone who looks at wedding photos and videos all day, it makes a huge difference.
Make Your Wedding Your Playlist
And finally, don't be afraid to make a list of what you do and don't want to hear. Trust me, both DJs and bands tend to play the same songs for every wedding, and they wouldn't mind getting to add a bit of creativity to it.
